Sea Dragons Swim Team 2007 – “Success”
The Sea Dragons first season has ended a complete success. The team had about 20 swimmers. We had four away swim meets and a Fantasy Swim Meet at our home pool. The season was a learning experience not only for the kids, but for the coaches as well. The kids have been spectacular and made every minute worthwhile. We have formed a cohesive group that I know I have truly enjoyed.
The 2008 swim season is on paper and the infrastructure is being laid out. Our goal is to get closer to the 50 swimmer mark. This will allow us to compete in the meets in an overall picture. Currently, our total number of swimmers makes it difficult for us to win a meet against the other teams who usually have no less than approximately 60 swimmers. This is not to say that we don't ROCK individually - WE DO! Our swimmers would amaze you. I will admit that, at least once in each meet they leave me with my mouth hanging open over someone's outstanding accomplishment.
During the off season we will be looking at fundraising. A couple of our ideas include working with a local nursery to offer pine straw to the subdivision, selling outdoor tree luminaries at the holiday season, pizza sales, etc. The swim team will be running these types of fundraisers each year to raise money for supplies, upgrading current supplies and to eventually pay for coaches. My goal from the beginning has been to put a swim team in place, but it doesn't stop there. I hope that swim events, fundraising events, and other activities put in place by the swim team will allow our community to become closer and stronger. Each activity I have listed takes time and effort on the part of someone. Each one of them can be looked at as a potential thorn in your side or something you want no part of. I promise you that we have had nothing but FUN. Its work, but we have made friends we never even knew lived here, we laugh, we play, and the kids have a good time too!
Anyone up to the age of 18 is invited to join the swim team. If you would like to help with fundraising - bring it on. Even if you don't have kids on the team, but you would like to be a part we are happy to have you. Any ideas, suggestions, or experience someone might have with fundraising is welcomed.
Many people have made it possible for the swim team to survive. I want to thank the Board of Directors for the use of the pool and assisting us to get started, and all the parents for their time and effort during practice and swim meets. A special thanks to the parents who helped with the equipment and practices and to the "Woolard Way Sac" who assisted with the Fantasy Swim Meet. My final acknowledgement and thanks is to Cris Clarke, our TSA Representative and assistant coach. Cris has been paramount to the success of this team. Cris and I definitely wound up being a finely balanced machine, but it was hard work and Cris had to put in many hours. Thank You.
